"Sólo vemos una vez a don Quijote leer libros de caballería y es cuando hojea el falso Quijote de Avellaneda, donde se cuentan las aventuras que él nunca ha vivido: precisamente en el momento en que la novela pone en escena su capacidad de absorber el mundo para ficcionalizarlo todo. Tenemos las fotos en que Borges intenta descifrar las letras de un libro que sostiene casi pegado a su cara; la de Joyce, un ojo tapado con un parche, leyendo con una lupa de gran aumento. Y hay una instantánea en la que el Che Guevara, trepado a una rama en plena selva boliviana, se concentra en la lectura, y tenemos también a Hamlet apareciendo por primera vez en escena con un libro en la mano. Y a Anna Karenina, a Madame Bovary; a esos lectores tan locos, geniales e inadecuados como Hamlet y Alonso Quijano que son Bouvard y Pécuchet. ¿Qué significan estas escenas de lectura, escenas secundarias y casi irrelevantes para las tramas novelescas, pero en las que asoma su sistema secreto? Piglia vuelve a mostrar que es uno de los grandes maestros en la construcción de itinerarios insólitos para leer la literatura contemporánea, en un libro extraordinario que, en palabras del autor, es "el más personal y el más íntimo de todos los que he escrito"."
